Specialists from Cuba and the United States began a scientific expedition / WIF: Granma Cuba
The ship Walton Smith has become a joint house for specialists from Cuba and the United States who began a scientific expedition to study the extent of the deep coral reefs around the archipelago to compare their state of conservation and physical, genetic and environmentally connectivity.
This trip will lay the foundations for future joint research in the field of marine knowledge, and promote the exchange of experiences between both countries.
Organisms that participate in the organization of the trip by the Cuban side (all belonging to CITMA):
Institute of Marine Sciences
National Center for Protected Areas
Center for Marine Research of the University of Havana
Office of Fisheries Regulations of the Ministry of Food Industry
Geocuba Business Group
For the North American part:
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Florida Atlantic University.
The joint work responds to the intention expressed between the two Governments from the melting of relations during the term of President Obama in the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation for the Conservation and Management of Marine Protected Areas signed in Havana on November 18 2015 between Citma, NOAA and the National Parks Service of the US Department of the Interior.
A further way of dismantling the blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba & one more reason (in behalf of the nature) to argue that relations between both countries must be continued.
