#ChillOut Time: Outdoor #movies in #NYC

Forget the movie theater for a night. It’s the season to be outside as much as possible, and watching a flick with friends should be no exception.These public parks and rooftops are making the most of spring and summer, offering free and ticketed outdoor screenings across the city during the warm-weather months.

Get your blanket ready, pack some popcorn and watch some favorite films. The sky’s the limit.


A Summer Movie Under the Stars

Prospect Park has teamed up with Nitehawk Cinema for its free “A Summer Movie Under the Stars” series, at Long Meadow North in the park. Attendees can enjoy live music from local bands and DJs starting at 7 p.m. before each screening of family friendly films. BYO picnics are encouraged.

  • Aug. 2: “Moonrise Kingdom”
  • Aug. 9: “Zootopia”

HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival

One of the most popular free outdoor screenings, this Bryant Park-HBO collaboration is back, giving you a reliable summer plan for Mondays. This year’s lineup features the classics, from “Dirty Dancing” to the original “King Kong,” with screenings starting June 19, and the lawn opening at 5 p.m.

  • July 3: “Sabrina”
  • July 17: “Wall Street”
  • July 24: “Pillow Talk”
  • July 31: “The Hustler”
  • Aug. 7: “All That Jazz”
  • Aug. 14: “North By Northwest”
  • Aug. 21: “Dirty Dancing”

Randall’s Island

Randall’s Island is celebrating its 25th anniversary by including movies in its lineup that premiered in 1992.May 28: “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” 8:30 p.m.

  • June 11: “Aladdin,” 8:30 p.m.
  • June 25: “Zootopia,” 8:30 p.m.
  • July 9: “Sister Act,” 8:30 p.m.

Rooftop Cinema Club

Unlike many of the free outdoor screenings, you’ll have to plan in advance to snag a ticket to the Rooftop Cinema Club — tickets are $33 to $39. This season’s lineup, which will take place at Hell’s Kitchen’s Yotel and Bushwick’s Office Ops, includes a mix of recent Oscar noms and notable classics.

Rooftop Cinema Club runs from May 4 to June 26, with films like “Moonlight,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Moana” playing multiple times throughout the series. For a full list of the lineup, head to

McCarren Park Summer Screen

This season’s SummerScreen lineup at McCarren Park is so fetch. The Wednesday movie nights include favorites from “Mean Girls” to “Donnie Darko,” with live music before and local vendors doling out food and drinks throughout. Head to the park starting at 6 p.m. to claim your spot. Films start at sundown

  • July 5: “Mean Girls”

  • July 19: “Donnie Darko”
  • July 26: “Selena”
  • Aug. 2: “I Know What You Did Last Summer”
  • Aug. 9: Audience choice

Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park is back with its “Movies With a View” lineup, featuring one film chosen by a public online vote on Aug. 24. All films begin at sundown. There will also be a pre-show party with DJs, food and a beer garden.

  • July 20: “Casablanca”
  • July 27: “The Lego Movie”
  • Aug. 3: “9 to 5”

Socrates Sculpture ParkThe Long Island City park has once again teamed up with Film Forum to host a series of films featuring international flicks. Films begin at sunset, with pre-screening performances starting at 7 p.m.

  • July 12: “Easy Money”
  • July 19: TBA
  • July 26: “Chevalier”
  • Aug. 2: TBA
  • Aug. 9: “The Silence Before Bach”
  • Aug. 16: “Romance & Cigarettes”
