About a decade ago, the Cenesex (Center for Sex Education, attached to the Ministry of Public Health) has been conducting in May the Days Against Homophobia, which have been placing in the public opinion of Cuba previously taboo subjects, such as homosexuality, trans-sexuality or marriage between people of the same sex. It is impossible to deny the work of this Center, and its director and leader, Mariela Castro Espín, who have managed to put on the agenda of the government and in our legal system brushstrokes of the most advanced thinking on gender and sexuality.

Just to give an example: Who would have thought that a country full of ancestral “machismo” and social atavism typical of underdevelopment would discuss, openly and publicly, the inclusion in the new Constitution the right of any person, regardless of their sexual orientation, to get married?
